THE TRIUNE GOD AT WORK IN US STILL CREATING

Text: Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV).

Reading: Matthew 28: 16-20

Hymn: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! – StF 11

St. Augustine who proposed and defended the doctrine of the Trinity was once told by a little boy that it will be easier to empty the sea into the sand than for one to understand the Trinity. Trinity simply means that God is one but exists in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, equal and eternal, distinct yet acting in unity. Two examples of passages in the Bible that hint at the Trinity are the benediction ‘The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all’ (2 Corinthians 13:13) and the great commission, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’ (Matthew 28:19)

Genesis chapter 1 portrays the first instance of the Trinity working together. God created the universe out of nothing, the Holy Spirit brood over the surface of the deep and then God spoke (the son is the word, see John 1:1) ‘let there be light.’ Thus, right from the beginning we see God the father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit at work in their oneness yet distinct in nature and ministry.

As the Spirit of God was brooding over the surface of that chaos so shall he cover you against any chaos! I speak to every chaos in your life by the power of the Holy Spirit, there shall be order. I declare war on every disruption in your life and pronounce the peace of God upon you. May God clothe you with the beauty of his creation! May the Son, who is the word, speak life into every dead situation. May the power of the Trinity brood over COVID-19 and transform its chaos into calm and peace.
In the Gospel, Christ’s commission to the disciples reminds us that the Triune God is still at work together among creation. We are commanded to make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey all the teachings of Christ. God through Christ and the Holy Spirit is giving us the opportunity again to be co-creators with him. He is giving us another chance to partner the Trinity in ministry and in delivering the world.
Where we have failed, may the Spirit of God enable us to succeed. Where we have falling, may the Holy Spirit lift us up. Where we are lacking strength and energy, may the Holy Spirit provide and where we are stuck, may Jesus make a way again. Amen.
