Thought for the week.

The one who knows best

Rob Lacey once said to me that he thought the problem for townies with Psalm 23 was the shepherd. City dwellers don’t do sheep. You can’t beat the King James version but perhaps this take on the psalm brings out something of its meaning

Imagine this scene: I’m sat next to you on a warm afternoon by a quiet river, feeling safe and calm.

What could be better than that?

And that’s why I love you.

You’re the one who knows the best places to go

and takes me there;

You’re my captain, my defence from the night.

You know my fears about the future, about death

and you find a way through them for me.

I don’t have to be afraid when you’re by my side.

The boundaries you set make me feel safe

and, when something or someone gets to me,

you make me able to cope with it.

There’s just so much you give me

that I’m certain the warmth of your love

will surround me

every day and for all eternity.
